Even as a young child, Diane Givens Moffett recalls a lively spirituality. Growing up in Oakland, California, she was surrounded by her faithful family, influenced by the faith of her grandparents and involved with her church’s youth group, yet it never occurred to her to go into ministry.

Now the pastor and head of staff at St. James Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, N.C., Moffett has the distinction of having the largest congregation, at 650 members, of any African-American clergywoman in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
