Miss Shaney Swaleh Salim

Miss Shaney Swaleh Salim

Ms. Salim is a committed and practicing Muslim who works as a counsellor at a drug rehabilitation center called the Omar Project in Malindi, Kenya. Addicts pass through a drop-in center where they are assessed and then transferred to the rehabilitation center.

Shaney assesses the clients for rehabilitation intake. She advises those who come on life-style issues, including safer injection methods; counsels them on sexually transmitted infections (STIs), HIV/AIDS and methods of prevention; and refers them to the Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) Center, and for family therapy.

Miss Salim's involvement in PROCMURA began in 2001, when she attended a Christian-Muslim youth workshop organized by the Interfaith Youth Peace Initiative (IYPI) in Mombasa, Kenya. Since then she has taken part in a number of PROCMURA workshops and seminars, most recently the PROCMURA HIV/AIDS consultation in 2004, and the PROCMURA/CEOSS (Coptic Evangelical Organisation for Social Services) exchange program in 2005. She now has strong ties with the work of PROCMURA and serves as an associate and contact person among the Muslim women in the Kenya coastal town of Mombassa.
