In Lansing, Mich., Angele Wilson Dogbe and Shaney Swaleh
Salim met with youth, adult and women's groups at First Presbyterian Church and
had a lively discussion with Muslim and Presbyterian youth at the Islamic Center.
They also addressed an open community forum regarding their work.
Flying to Houston, the team met with the community of Atascocita
Presbyterian Church for dinner and discussion. They then went on to Austin, Texas,
where they spoke with students, faculty and local pastors at the Austin Presbyterian
Theological Seminary. They spoke to groups at the Westminster Presbyterian Church
and the Westlake Hills United Methodist Church. They also attended Friday Juma'a
prayer and took part in a discussion at the North Austin Muslim Community Center.
Travelling to North Carolina, Angele and Shaney spoke with
students at Davidson College and at Queens University in Charlotte. At each educational
institution they had an opportunity to meet with groups of women, to discuss
the challenges that women face in their own faith traditions, and the opportunities
as women to promote inter-religious relationships. The team also addressed two
public fora, and led a discussion with the adult Sunday School class at Davidson
College Presbyterian Church.
Our guests took a bit of rest at the Montreat Conference Center and engaged
in discussion with students at Montreat College before heading to Salem Presbytery.
There, Christians and Muslims engaged them in discussion at the First Presbyterian
Church in Salisbury, N.C., and they spoke at the Westminster Presbyterian Church
in Greensboro, N.C. The two women taught at Grace Presbyterian Church and led
the discussion at an open meeting at the Masjid Al-Mu-Munim in Winston-Salem,
N.C. They were also able to enjoy an informal evening with the national Moderator
of Presbyterian Women, Catrelia Hunter.
Rev. Dogbe and Ms. Salim returned to Nairobi, where they
continue to work together through the Program for Christian-Muslim Relations
in Africa (PROCMURA). PROCMURA is dedicated to promoting, within the churches
of Africa, faithful Christian witness to the Gospel in an interfaith Christian-Muslim
environment and constructive engagement with Muslims for peace, coexistence,
and the holistic development of persons and communities. Programs bringing women
and youth together are an integral part of this work. |
