May 2000
Dear friends:
Yesterday I returned from Viçosa, in the state of Minas
Gerais, about 500 miles north of where we live. There, at the
Evangelical Missions Center, I taught a graduate course on Biblical
Theology of Mission to 13 students from different regions and
church backgrounds.
They were:
- Gustavo & Ernesto, two Argentine Church of God pastors,
the first a professor of mission in his denomination, the other
a missionary among indigenous peoples of upper Argentina
- Walter, Minister of Mission and Evangelism at his Presbyterian
Church in Rio de Janeiro
- Florêncio, a pastor of the Charismatic Presbyterian
Church in southern Brazil
- Matuzael, a local Baptist pastor Miriam, a Baptist missionary
among Muslims in Brazil
- Sueli & Maruza, two Presbyterian women working as missionary
evangelists
- Sara, a courageous Northeastern Presbyterian woman serving
as evangelist in the impoverished hinterlands of her area of
Brazil
- Denise Andréa, a recent convert who spent the last
twenty years in and out of drug rehabilitation and two marriages,
now marvelously transformed and ready to serve Christ directing
a half-way house for substance addicts
- Nivea, who is preparing along with her husband for missionary
service among one of Brazils Indian populations
- And José Bernardo, or just "Zeca," director
of Inter-Varsity Christian Fellowship in Angola Africa.
Just to say their names and specify their backgrounds gives you
a taste of the joy and challenge I felt co-laboring with these
women and men for the sake of the gospel. All but one traveled
great distances, three from other countries, for this training.
Each one demonstrates a sense of urgent call that radiates from
their faces. I invite you to join me in prayer for these co-workers,
that God would equip them in every way for a holistic, joyful,
and faithful witness to Christ.
