A letter from Stephen and Kaeja Cho in Hungary

August 1, 2004

Dear Friends,

Aldas Bekeseeg!

Greeting from Budapest, Hungary, in the love of our Lord who is nurturing us during this hot summer.

It is our joy and privilege to share with you about our ministry in Hungary, especially on our ministry with the Roma.

It is our happiness to tell you about the dedication service for the church building of the Roma in Hosszupalyi. Even though the construction work of the educational wing and manse was not fully finished, the ceremony was held as scheduled on 27 May 2004. The construction of the main chapel was completely finished. About 300 peoples were there. There were Hungarians from the Reformed Church of Hungary (RCH), Korean guests from the Presbyterian Church in the Republic of Korea (PROK), mission workers from our denomination (PCUSA), our Roma believers, and other friends from Ukraine who are mission workers for the Roma in Ukraine. We’re sorry that you couldn’t be there for that special event.

Bishop Gusztav blesses the new church building for the Roma during the dedication service at Hosszupalyi, Hungary, accompanied by the moderator of the Presbyterian Church of the Republic of Korea.
One of the most touching moments of the ceremony was Bishop Gusztav’s sermon. His text was Colossians 3:11: “As a result, there is no longer any distinction between Gentiles and Jews, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarians, savages, slaves, and free men, but Christ is all, Christ is in all.” He emphasized that there are no differences between Hungarians and the Roma in Christ. There can no longer be prejudice toward the Roma in Christ. The Reformed Church of Hungary accepts the faith community of the Roma in Hosszupalyi as their friends in Christ. This new church building is the first church building for the Roma of RCH.

All 12 students who were supported by your financial support and prayers have been healthy during this hot summer vacation. Jonas Zsolti and Janas were invited by the European Union to attend the Roma youth conference in Duseldorf, Germany, from June 10 through 20. They were excited to have their own passports, and it was their first trip to a foreign country by air. They said that the experience was positive and seemed pleased to have their identity as Roma affirmed. The conference also helped them think about their future vision. Both of them received their license as computer technician from school.

Erno is happy with his first driver’s license and, after high school, in two years, would like to go to the police academy.

Marietta graduated from elementary school (that is, through the eighth grade). She passed the national exams to enter high school and is happy to be able to continue her studies in high school this coming September.

We express our thanks and deliver our joy to you for your support and prayers. God bless you!

In Jesus’ Love
