A letter from Stephen and Kaeja Cho in Hungary

March 28, 2006

Dear Friends in Jesus Christ:

Aldas Bekeseeg! We greet you with the Hungarian Reformed Church’s (HRC) official greeting, which means “peace and blessings,” in the love of our Lord, Jesus. It is almost the end of March. In Hungary, the weather is wetter and warmer than it was this winter, when we had lots of snow, and it was cold and gloomy. For the poor, and especially for the Roma, a cold winter is the hardest season to get through.

But during this severely cold winter, warm news was delivered to us—an invitation to a wedding from Janos. Some of you may remember Janos. He received your support while he was in high school, but last fall he had to quit due to his responsibility as a householder. Of course, we happily attended Janos and Zsanett’s wedding on December 29, 2005, in Tiszasuly.

Tiszasuly is a village by the Tisza River about 100 miles southeast of Budapest. The 20-year-old bridegroom and the16-year-old bride were happy among the many guests. One of the happiest guests was the bridegroom’s best friend, Jonas, who is studying at the college of the HRC. It is important for the Roma to have an official wedding ceremony and a document as proof of their marriage.

Usually, the Roma are not able to have an official wedding ceremony and never dreamt of a wedding done by a Hungarian pastor.

While the Reverend Joszef Csonka, pastor of the Hosszupalyi Roma faith community, was preaching during the ceremony in the room at the Tiszasuly city hall, our memories ran back to Gyula’s and Aranka’s wedding ceremony held a year ago in Debrecen. Gyula (you can meet him in our previous newsletter) and Aranka have lived for years without either a wedding ceremony or a marital document. Gyula, and especially Aranka, wished and prayed for a wedding ceremony in a church sanctuary.

Eventually, God heard and answered their prayers through God’s loving people who love the Roma, such as Karolina (you may meet her in our previous newsletter), the Reverend Vad Zsigmond (pastor of Nagy HRC in Debrecen), the Reverend Irene Buzas (HRC’s coordinator for the Roma mission), and others. They raised fund for and arranged a wedding ceremony and feast for Gyula and Aranka.   Photo of a bride and groom with three friends.

After the wedding in the Nagy HRC, Gyula and Aranka held up their official marriage license as if it were a trophy. Surprisingly, all the Roma guests clapped their hands and cheered joyfully. When we were with Vad Zsigmond last Saturday for the renovation matter of the Debrecen Roma mission center, he said, “The wedding of Gyula and Aranka was the first time I officiated at a wedding for a Roma couple.”

Janos and Zsanett (top left and right) were married on December 29, 2005, in the village of Tiszasuly. They are shown here with Zsanett's Hungarian foster parents.
Perhaps you now see why we said that news of Janos’ wedding was like a warm spell during the coldest weather. Last month, Janos and his wife Zsanett visited us in Budapest with Zsanett’s Hungarian foster parents. Janos and Zsanett expressed their thanks to those who have supported them in their studies and their intention to continue in high school in the near future. We deliver their thanks to you and ask that you remember them in your prayers.

By the way, work on repairing and renovating the Roma mission center in Debrecen hasn’t started yet due to cold weather and lack of funds. Would you remember this matter in your prayers, too?

During our Lenten journey toward the cross and the resurrection, we send you our thanks.

In Jesus’ love

Stephen and Kaeja
