Chenoa Stock was appointed in July 2006 to serve in Sri Lanka
as companionship facilitator for the Joining Hands Against Hunger
network, which is made up of grassroots NGOs, churches, and grassroots
organizations and includes people from Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim,
and Christian backgrounds.
Member organizations of the JHAH network study hunger, poverty,
and injustice and then propose strategies to address these problems.
These strategies could rely upon hunger education, public policy
advocacy, or development assistance. The network’s goal
is to promote the self-sufficiency of the poor and to confront
and influence the structures that sustain an unjust system. Some
of Chenoa’s work is with groups affected by the tsunami
of December 26, 2004, especially fishermen and women’s groups.
Chenoa's first experience doing
overseas mission was with a Habitat for Humanity trip to Lesotho
as a junior in college in 2003. This short period of service moved
her to apply to the popular Young Adult Volunteer program of the
PC(USA). Chenoa served as a Young Adult Volunteer in India from
August 2005 to July 2006. She lived in Thiruvalla, in Kerala,
serving with the Church of South India and teaching conversational
English in a primary school and in a nursery teachers’ training
school. |
