Brett and Shelly Faucett were appointed in July 2007 to serve as regional consultants for health and HIV/AIDS in Asia. They make their home in Chiang Mai and serve at the invitation of the Church of Christ in Thailand.
The Faucetts respond to requests for technical assistance from PC(USA) partner churches and institutions throughout Asia. They are charged with developing strategies and activities that promote healthy communities and provide a comprehensive response to the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
Shelly and Brett were privileged to visit a colleague who works at McKean Hospital in southern Chiang Mai. McKean Hospital was founded in 1908 as the first leprosy hospital in the country. In the early years, leprosy sufferers walked to McKean from all over Thailand and even from neighboring countries. There they found acceptance, shelter, and compassionate care, as well as the latest treatment for leprosy. The hospital grew to become a leprosy rehabilitation center that provided physical and occupational therapy. Its goal has always been to empower patients to attain their maximum physical potential and to live psychologically healthy lives with a sense of self-worth and self-acceptance.
Now called Hansen’s disease, leprosy has been nearly eradicated due to education and treatment, but McKean continues to administer to a few rare cases. The hospital has become more focused on care for the elderly and disabled persons, and it now offers vocational training. Quite a few former patients work for McKean, making handicrafts, constructing prosthetic limbs, and assembling and fixing bicycles.
