Why are these women celebrating?
Mission co-worker Sue Makin asks, “Why are these women celebrating?” They are happy because they are going to plant new trees on Mulanje Mountain in Malawi. With assistance from well-wishers, dozens of young trees will be planted by a Christian women’s group to benefit future generations in the community. All over Africa, women have plans and hopes for the future of their children.
African women comprise 70 percent of Africa’s subsistence agricultural workforce. They are responsible for 78 percent of food production, 80 percent of food processing, and 80 percent of fuel preparation and water gathering.
Jesus said, “Come to me, all you who are weary and are heavy carrying burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matt. 11:28–29).
Let us be inspired by the examples of strong African women who are the beasts of burden, the water pipes, the plows, and the threshers. Let us pray for justice in the lives of these women so that their children, boys and girls, will have bountiful lives.
