Malawi
Chrissy’s indomitable spirit is a witness to all.
In March 2007 mission co-workers Jim and Jodi McGill met Chrissy. Meeting her reminded them of the privilege it is to be part of another person’s life.
Chrissy was thirteen when her father died and fifteen when she fell from a mango tree and became paraplegic. Malawi has no provisions for those who cannot walk, but she went to a boarding secondary school and finished with high enough marks to enter university. Her mother left twenty-one-year-old Chrissy in charge of three younger siblings when she went to seek employment in South Africa last year. She has not returned.
When Chrissy developed pressure sores, Jodi and Jim facilitated her admission into two hospitals to help with closure of the wounds, and they provided supplies afterwards. They assisted Chrissy with her application to university, made it possible for her youngest sibling to enter a boarding school for primary school students, and helped her other sibling apply for a scholarship to secondary school under the synod’s scholarship fund.
Chrissy’s wounds are healing, and she has been accepted to university to study information communication technology. Throughout everything all three of these young people have persevered and remained positive and appreciative of every effort. Although being engaged in their lives has taken time and money, it has undeniably been a privilege for Jodi and Jim to know Chrissy and her siblings.
