Mozambique
In rugged Tete Province along the Zambezi, new churches frequently spring up. The model is simple: train a few leaders who can reach their communities and who in turn will send out others. The Rev. Nedson Zulu, a missionary working with support from The Outreach Foundation, conducts three-day to five-day seminars for elders, evangelists, teachers, women’s leaders, youth leaders, and public health workers. Since 1994, the project has grown from four congregations to almost sixty. At the same time, Mozambique has witnessed the return of many refugees.
Mr. Zulu says the cycle that many Western organizations begin by building churches or schools, or drilling for water — and then depart without engaging and equipping local leadership — creates dependencies and that real development is working hand in hand with Christ, one person at a time.
Mauritius
Mauritius consistently ranks as one of Africa’s most prosperous and egalitarian nations. Despite Mauritius’s relative affluence, the capital city of Port Louis is beset by many of the same problems as any other urban area. People flock to the city from outlying areas in search of economic opportunity, but some encounter only hardship and homelessness. St. Jean’s Presbyterian Church, one of five Presbyterian congregations on the island, provides a hot meal each week for scores of homeless and undernourished people in the capital. Several nights a week, young people from the congregation visit many of the places where homeless people sleep and share food and friendship.
