Lesotho

A young child clings to Nancy Dimmock’s leg.
I don’t even know his name,” writes mission co-worker Nancy Dimmock, “but he drew me to him with his big, sad eyes.” Nancy was visiting a children’s shelter in the capital city of Lesotho—one of the countries with the highest HIV infection rates in the world and the consequent tragedy of thousands of orphans. The boy was standing forlornly on the worn carpet of the infant room, with a dirty diaper around his ankles. Three infants were in cribs and the rest were tumbling around on the floor. All had dirty diapers.
“I went over to the little guy and winced as I cleaned him up,” continues Nancy. “His little bottom was covered in sores. He was standing because he could not sit without pain. After giving him a clean diaper and a hug, I reluctantly let him go. He went to a corner and lay down, curling into himself to ward off the misery.”
The organization caring for these children is the Ministry of Insured Salvation. It is directed by an amazing woman, Mavis Mochochoko, who had a Paul-like conversion experience in a bar twenty-five years ago. Jesus appeared to her in a bright light and said, “You are mine.” He gave her a vision for the care of abandoned or orphaned children. Today, she is caring for over one hundred children ages one to twenty-one. Nancy concludes, “I’m thinking it would be a privilege to share our resources and time and energy with her, to serve these children better.”
