Minute for Mission: Transfiguration of the Lord

Kenny shares a big smile at Fuente summer soccer camp.
One ministry of Iglesia Fuente de la Esperanza (Fountain of Hope Church) is a soccer camp held for nine-year-old boys and girls for a week in the summer. Fuente was started by Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church of Houston in April 2007 in a densely populated area in our city.
This photo is of a very excited soccer player named Kenny, who has just finished participating in the five-day camp. In the mornings, the soccer practice was led by a national level, professional soccer player and local volunteers from Fuente and Memorial Drive Presbyterian. After lunch at Fuente, the children spent afternoons singing, reading Bible stories, and learning how to apply Bible stories to their lives. These activities were led by clergy, adult leaders, and middle and high school students from both churches.
Let’s explore what Kenny may be thinking about all he has absorbed in these last few warm summer days in Houston.
“Instead of spending a week around our apartment house where gang members are trying to recruit more members, God has brought me to Fuente. I have always played pickup games of soccer with friends, but now I am learning how great it is to be part of a team with all position players. The teachers have helped me learn about faith. They taught me about Jesus who died to save all people from their sins. I am learning about how to share God’s love with people who feel unloved and to share what I have with others.”
—Mike Tiller, teacher, Fuente High School and Sunday school, and member, Memorial Drive Presbyterian, Houston, Texas
Dear Jesus, open our eyes to see you not only as our brother, but as the transfigured grace of God. May this vision inspire us to be generous in sharing your love and all that you have given us. In your name we pray. Amen.
