Olympia Presbytery

Washington

Front view of a home and land devasted by flooding.
Olympia Presbytery sent volunteers to help the residents of this home near Doty, Washington, recover from flooding.

A primary focus of Olympia Presbytery’s efforts to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with God has been disaster recovery. Congregations from Seattle, North Puget Sound, and Inland Northwest presbyteries have joined Olympia congregations to help communities in the Pacific Northwest that flooded in 2006 and 2007. By God’s grace and interesting timing, Olympia was prepared for this ministry by sending work teams to the Gulf Coast and New Orleans after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. God has been gracious in providing many willing hands and hearts to contribute time and treasure to the renovation of property and the renewal of life. The relationships that have been built are what the work of the gospel is all about.

Westminster Presbyterian in Chehalis was a Red Cross shelter in the storm’s aftermath, and Harrison Square Presbyterian in Centralia continues to host a distribution center for supplies and provide a headquarters for relief teams. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has been an enormous help with both grant funds and staff. In addition to homes, many businesses and farms have been destroyed. Only with the help of God’s people will this area recover any time soon. Please continue to pray for the survivors and relief workers. If you would like to make a donation, send it to the Presbytery of Olympia, designated for “Deluge 2007.” If you would like to send a work team, contact the Long Term Recovery Organization at (360) 740-8823.

Olympia Presbytery is home to 50 churches with 10,330 members and Sound View Camp and Retreat Center.
