The national leader of the PCN, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Usung, greets visitors at the first convention of the entire church.
The turnout was overwhelming and the feeling electric,” writes former regional liaison Glen Hallead. “Like the famished deer that pants for life-saving water, Presbyterians of all ages and from all walks of life gathered on the grounds of the Hope Waddell Training Institution in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, August 16–18, 2007.
“Members have shared the gospel in all parts of Nigeria as well as in the Republics of Benin and Togo where the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria (PCN) has established mission stations, outreaches, congregations, and parishes. At the national convention, members celebrated their mission history of over 160 years and recommitted themselves to taking the gospel of Jesus Christ to the ends of the earth. They also pledged to fight HIV/AIDS and to demonstrate solidarity with those who live with the pandemic.
“The Moderator of the General Assembly, the Rt. Rev. Dr. Ubon Bassey Usung, could not hide his joy at the turnout of more than twenty thousand for the epoch-making event. He encouraged everyone to always have in their minds the imminence of the second coming of Jesus Christ. ‘For every Presbyterian,’ he said, ‘it would be disastrous if we allow ethnic dichotomies to distract us from evangelism and mission. We have to stop the infighting and quarreling that cause us to lose ground and members to others and even to the kingdom of darkness. We should rather unite and go out and bring souls into the kingdom of God.’”
