Cameroon
Mission co-worker Shirley Hill works with the Presbyterian Church of Cameroon as a consultant for the church on issues relating to HIV/AIDS, in a country where 11 percent of the population is HIV positive. Shirley answered the call to full-time ministry in 2002 and entered Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. Prior to attending seminary, Shirley, a registered nurse, worked at Liberty Hospital in Liberty, Missouri, as a health educator and parish nurse coordinator. She taught HIV/AIDS prevention as a volunteer for the Red Cross.
Shirley was ordained to the ministry of Word and Sacrament on February 12, 2006, at Gashland Presbyterian Church in Kansas City, Missouri. She is a minister member of Heartland Presbytery.
Equatorial Guinea
In recent years Equatorial Guinea has become one of sub-Saharan Africa’s biggest oil producers. Though this has brought in a great deal of money, the country remains in the hands of a few and the wealth has not benefited the many who need it. The government, known for its corruption, has a poor human rights record. Mission co-workers Andrés and Gloria Garcia, who serve as evangelists with the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Equatorial Guinea (IRPGE), express concern about the injustices in the country. They ask for prayer for the government and the middle-governing officials that God would grant them the spiritual sensibility to care for the people. The Garcias also ask for prayers as they provide support for the IRPGE’s ambitious outreach program to meet the needs of Equatorial Guineans.
