Sudan

Worshipers gather outside the Presbyterian church in Boma, southern Sudan.
Ingrid Reneau was appointed in July 2007 as a mission co-worker to serve as education officer with the Presbyterian Church of Sudan, the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church, and the Association of Christian Resource Organizations Serving Sudan. Charged with helping to implement plans to expand the church-sponsored school system, Ingrid works to improve its administrative capabilities and strengthen its teaching methodologies.
She writes that she has wondered about her presence in Africa, as a descendant of those enslaved Africans who chose to survive the middle passage. She was led to consider the words of Ghanaian theologians Kwame and Mary Bediako: “What is Africa saying to you? Why has the Lord brought you here to serve him?”
“I kept listening to the stories of those serving in southern Sudan,” she continues. “Their stories of frustration and challenge led to worry about whether things would ever change.
“And I remember thinking, ‘But what if it is not the things or the people that we encounter that are to change, but that we must change! What if ultimately we are the projects that God is saving through mission in Africa?’ What if God has us here more for our own transformations? Perhaps in this way we can be united as one with our African brothers and sisters.”

Gracious God, thank you for the men and women of Sudan who faithfully gather in your name. We ask that you would do the work of transformation among all people and that barriers would be broken down so that relationships can be built. In the name of our Savior, Jesus. Amen.
