The winners of the 2007 contest demonstrated the best of what we mean by multiculturalism:

• Racial, cultural, gender and generational inclusiveness
• Diverse cultural representation within church staff
• Integration of mission and ministry of church
• Commitment to community outreach
• Intentional focus on issues of justice and peace
• Involvement of youth and young adults
• Partnership with other congregations
• Interfaith relations and cross cultural ministries (such as pulpit exchanges and celebrations of racial ethnic heritage)
• Excitement about church growth
• Innovative and inclusive worship

We evaluated the mission statement of each congregation — in the winning congregations it reflects the diverse makeup of the community. In each of the winning congregations at least 20 percent of the members represent a culture other than the dominant one in that community.
