The winners of the 2007 contest demonstrated the best of what we mean by multiculturalism:
- Racial, cultural, gender and generational inclusiveness
- Diverse cultural representation within church staff
- Integration of mission and ministry of church
- Commitment to community outreach
- Intentional focus on issues of justice and peace
- Involvement of youth and young adults
- Partnership with other congregations
- Interfaith relations and cross cultural ministries (such as pulpit exchanges and celebrations of racial ethnic heritage)
- Excitement about church growth
- Innovative and inclusive worship
We evaluated the mission statement of each congregation — in the winning congregations it reflects the diverse makeup of the community. In each of the winning congregations at least 20 percent of the members represent a culture other than the dominant one in that community.
