  Weeks One Through Three:  
  Women Leaders in the Hebrew Scriptures  
             
  Use the books by Miriam Therese Winter as a resource or simply use your own Bibles.  
             
  Week One:  

Miriam (WomanWisdom, p.74)

  • Exodus 2:1-10, 15:19-21; Numbers 12, 20:1-2; Deuteronomy 24:8-9; 1Chronicles 6:1-3; Micah 6:3-4.
  • Miriam was the sister of Moses who played a major role in the liberation of the Hebrews from Egypt. She was also a dancer.
 
             
  Week Two:  

Deborah (WomanWitness, p.32)

  • Judges 4:1-22, 5:1-31
  • Deborah was a judge and prophetess in early Israel who was also a military leader and brought the Israelites to victory over the Canaanite army. She was also a musician.
 
             
  Week Three:  

Esther (WomanWitness, p.95)

  • The Book of Esther
  • Esther was crowned queen after her predecessor was deposed. She saved her people from genocide by using her "feminine wiles."
 
             
  Week Four:  

Celebrate the Gifts of Women

  • Use the liturgy prepared by Women's Ministries Program Area.
  • Celebrate the gifts of Miriam, Deborah, and Esther, as well as the women leaders who have inspired you.
  • Share your own hopes and dreams for your contribution to the world.
 
             
  Weeks Five Through Eight:  
  Women in the Life and Ministry of Jesus  
             
  Use the books by Miriam Therese Winter as a resource or simply use your own Bibles.  
             
  Week Five:  

Samaritan Woman at the Well (WomanWord, p.105)

  • John 4:1-42
  • An outcast woman is greeted by Jesus and offered "living water." She qualifies as the "first evangelist" in the gospel of John.
 
             
  Week Six:  

Woman with the Flow of Blood (WomanWord, p.57)

  • Mark 5:25-34/ Luke 8:43-48/ Matthew 9:20-22
  • A woman who has been ritually unclean for twelve years seeks healing from Jesus.
 
             
  Week Seven:  

Mary Magdalene (WomanWord, p.156)

  • Luke 8:1-3; John 19:25, 20:1-18; Mark 15:40-41, 47, 16:1-11; Matthew 27:55-56, 61; 28:1-10; Luke 23:49, 55-56; 24:1-11
  • One of the Galilean women who accompanied Jesus in his ministry, probably a leader of the women. Witness to the resurrection and "evangelist."
 
             
  Week Eight:  

Women at Pentecost (WomanWord, p.174)

  • Acts 1:12-14, 2:1-18
  • Women who were empowered by the Holy Spirit to teach, preach, and witness to the good news. A good possibility for discussion about how each student is called to be a bearer of good news in the world.
 
             
  Week Nine:  

Several Options

  • Do another "Celebrate the Gifts of Women" time with a focus on the women in the life of Jesus
  • Conduct a further in-depth examination of one of the women you have studied
  • Engage in a spiritual discipline, such as a prayer walk or lectio divina (see spiritual formation handout) using Psalm 63, 52, or 23
 
             
  Week Ten:  

Share a meal together

  • Perhaps invite a "Wise Woman Mentor" who has been important to you throughout the semester/year/your life. Share what you have been doing with the Wise Woman and have her share her faith journey with you.
