How has the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) responded?

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has sent $50,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing and designated funds. The funds are being used to provide relief items — food parcels and hygiene items — to displaced Lebanese civilians.

Who are our partners in this response?

The Middle East Council of Churches (MECC), our long-time partner in the region, is helping to coordinate the relief response as a member of the Action by Churches Together (ACT) International alliance. PDA funds were sent in response to an ACT appeal for assistance.

How is assistance being distributed?

All ACT members adhere to the International Code of Conduct in their relief work. Aid is being provided to the most vulnerable people affected by the crisis. It will not be used to further a particular political opinion or movement. We are working in Lebanon through the Middle East Council of Churches, our historic and long-term mission partner. We are not working through the Lebanese government, Hezbollah or any political or military entity. Our church partners in the country are receiving support for their relief efforts through the MECC and asked that we support that response.

Are funds being sent to Israel?

We do not have any mission partners in Israel to receive and account for funds, making it impossible for PDA to respond within the country. We know of only one Christian group, the American Friends Service Committee, currently responding within Israel. We urge Presbyterians who want to donate to relief efforts in Israel to channel funds through this group.

Where can I find additional information on the Presbyterian response?

The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance Web site will continue to have our most recent response. We also hope to include worship resources and mission stories.

A special Web site on Lebanon has also been set up by the World Mission program area that includes related news and statements.
