CEDAR RAPIDS - See what you started, Lance Armstrong?

The wristband fad initiated by the cycling star for cancer awareness has taken form in Eastern Iowa, but with a different color and meaning.

Blue silicone bands with the inscription "Out of Chaos, Hope" were handed out Sunday to members at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Associate Pastor Jim Langley said 2,000 bands were delivered to the church after he saw a presbytery representative wearing one after the flood and had some ordered.

"It'll just be a tangible reminder for folks that in bad times, there is hope," Langley said.

The remaining bands will be given to volunteers who are staying at Westminster and Christ Church Presbyterian in Cedar Rapids, St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Iowa City and another work site in Louisa County. The volunteers will hand some out in the communities where they work.

The idea for the bands actually started with Kaylene Hoskins, an administrative assistant with the North Central Iowa Presbytery in Waterloo, after tornados ripped through the area in May.

Nearly 1,000 bands have been handed out in Parkersburg, New Hartford and other areas.

"People were shell-shocked and still are after these disasters," Hoskins said. "We were trying to find a segue to walk up to folks. We wanted them to know that we're really thinking about you and we're going to be there for the long haul."

The saying on the bands is the slogan for Presbyterian Disaster Assistance, whose workers are recognizable because of their blue shirts.

Hoskins said the bands serve as an important reminder, and they help bring people together.

"It gives folks a sense of community when they're all wearing them," Hoskins said.
