On Sunday evening, August 26, 2007, a tornado estimated to be a Force 3 or 4 swept through Northwood, North Dakota. Northwood is located 30 miles southwest of Grand Forks. The tornado covered a width of eight-tenths of a mile, resulting in destruction or damage to over 90 percent of the community’s residences.
Executive Presbyter Chuck Traylor of the Presbytery of Northern Plains met on Monday with ecumenical and other relief organization representatives as they reconstituted the organization that was set up to respond to the flooding in Grand Forks in 1997. First Presbyterian Church in Grand Forks, North Dakota, has offered to be a site for meetings, clearing house, case management interviews or whatever may be needed.
PDA is rushing $10,000 from One Great Hour of Sharing and designated funds for initial response work and planning of the longer recovery process. This is in response to Presbytery of Northern Plains’ request for immediate support.
At this time, we do not have information on the need for outside volunteer work teams. Additional information will be shared as we receive it from the presbytery.
