All major rivers in western Washington are at or above flood stage — and more rain is predicted. In 2003, more than 3,000 people had to be evacuated when floodwaters rose. This time around, damage has the potential to be worse, forecasters said.
Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) has provided funds from One Great Hour of Sharing in response to a request from the Presbytery of North Puget Sound. Members of the PDA National Response Team will also visit with the presbytery to provide support and consultation as they move forward with the response and recovery efforts.
A report from the Presbytery of North Puget Sound states:
“ . . . flooding has occurred in Western Washington state between Sunday November 5 and Tuesday November 7, 2006, especially within the boundary of North Puget Sound Presbytery. Many homes have been flooded, damaged, and people evacuated in our area. In response, an ecumenical and interfaith task force called Skagit Interfaith Flood Relief (SIFR) is being formed to address needs in the Skagit county area.
SIFR was formed in 2003 to respond to flooding that occurred during that season and received financial assistance from PDA for those efforts. Because of the commitment of the SIFR members and their congregations, assistance from PDA, and help from other sources, SIFR was able to rebuild 13 homes for families in the area and provide other forms of assistance.”
PDA is also in contact with other presbyteries in the affected area to offer assistance or guidance as needed and requested. |
