Twenty-six youth and adults traveled to the heart of Appalachia as this summer’s mission trip led us to West Virginia. Our goal was simple: to help relieve those whose homes had been destroyed by the torrential flooding of the past years and to offer our services to help in the rebuilding of homes and communities in the small town of Montgomery.

Poverty in the mountain state

West Virginia is one of the poorest states in the United States, with Fayette County, the site of our work camp, living with a 40% unemployment rate. The statistics are startling to say the least, with many families left helpless to repair homes and properties after disaster such as the flooding of 2003. It is humbling to say the least, to know that millions of people in our country today live in these conditions.

Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and West Virginia Ministry of Advocacy & Work Camps

Together with the Presbyterian Church and Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA), West Virginia Ministry of Advocacy & Work Camps (WVMAW) has provided relief to the communities of West Virginia for many years. Currently, this ministry operates at three different sites throughout the state, hosting nearly 40 different groups throughout 2005. Our site location host was the First Presbyterian Church of Montgomery, which has transformed its top floor to accommodate mission teams throughout the year!

From chaos to hope

Although our work was dirty, intense and tiring, all of our youth performed outstandingly as we served two different sites in the community. The first home was dedicated to reconstructing the interior of the home after years of leaks and water damage. This was accomplished by replacing walls and ceilings, and plenty of spackling and painting. The second home’s project was a result of flood damage, as the goal was to replace several rotted out floors throughout the house, as well as replace a damaged back porch. After a week of hard work and many newly learned skills, there was much progress made and many projects successfully completed!

This year's mission team

Our team this year represented not only ourselves and Youth and Young Adult (YAYA) Ministries, but the entire congregation and community of believers. Thank you to all who have supported us throughout this experience through time, finances, and prayer, and we hope you can join us next summer for another great experience!
