Life Abundant: Values, Choices and Health Care, The Responsibility and Role of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

The 200th General Assembly (1988) adopted the revolutionary and far-reaching policy statement reprinted in this volume, Life Abundant: Values, Choices and Health Care, The Responsibility and Role of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). Almost fifteen year have passed between the adoption of this wonderfully comprehensive policy and the current reprinting. Yet this statement remains a relevant and enduring expression on the basic values of compassion, caring love, community wholeness, well-being, and justice that we hold to be fundamental in understanding and address health issues. It continues as a valid policy and timely guide to understanding and responding for the agencies, governing bodies and people of the church.

Parish Nursing: Stories of Service and Care

Edited by Benner Carson and Harold G. Koenig
Published by Templeton Foundation Press

These engaging stories from parish nurses provide an accessible and enjoyable account of parish nursing—an emerging ministry of healing that provides a new approach to both healthcare as well as pastoral care. This ministry includes volunteer or paid nurses who attend to the needs of a congregation in a variety of ways—from home, hospice, or hospital visits to community outreach.

Written for a popular as well as professional audience, the book weaves together stories of nurses as they journey into a territory largely uncharted. They tell stories of hearing God’s call, of their responses to this call, of their faith that they are doing the “right thing,” of their joys, sorrows, and challenges, and of quiet dedication as they offer their time and talents to meet the needs of others.

Available at online retailers or your local bookstore.

Spiritual Caregiving: Healthcare as a Ministry

By Verna Benner Carson and Harold G. Koenig
Published by Templeton Foundation Press

With today’s cumbersome insurance procedures, government regulations, endless paperwork, and concerns about malpractice rates, many healthcare professionals are asking: "Why am I doing this? Am I making a difference to my patients? Is there a better way — and if so, what is it?" In this book, Carson and Koenig examine the state of the healthcare system with the goal of providing healthcare professionals and caregivers the inspiration and practical tools to re-claim their sense of purpose.

The book begins with an evaluation of the current system from the perspective of the spiritual vision that initially motivated and nourished many caregivers. The authors then pose a vision of a healthcare system that supports and nurtures the spirituality of patients and their families, of which some elements already exist.

Available at online retailers or your local bookstore.
