Variations on the French Reformed Church Baptismal Liturgy
For several decades, variations on a portion of the French Reformed Church baptismal liturgy have been used in PC(USA) congregations. When infants are baptized, the minister addresses the child directly, proclaiming the sure promise of God. The Office of Theology and Worship provides these examples, noting that no single set of words is "right." Pastoral judgment may lead to particular variations.

Reformation Sunday
The tradition of Reformation Sunday offers an opportunity to celebrate our heritage and history and to affirm our central theological convictions and to consider God's ongoing reformation of the church. The Presbyterian Church does not have special scripture readings or resources designated for Reformation Sunday, since it is not part of the liturgical calendar. However the following suggestions may be helpful as you begin to plan for that day.

Service for the Lord's Day This is an Adobe Acrobat pdf document.
Why is the order of worship important? What do the various parts of the service mean? This commentary on the Service for the Lord's Day provides a clear and accessible interpretation of the order of worship, ideal for worship committees and others who want to deepen their understanding of the liturgy. Reproduced by permission of Westminster/John Knox Press.

Lectionary Readings
This site provides daily resources for meditation and prayer and includes:

  • A Daily Lectionary of readings from the Old Testament, Epistles and Gospels.
  • Mission Yearbook entries with stories of mission in the Church and prayer requests.
  • Today's question from the new catechism — a learning tool about Christian faith designed in question and answer form.

Extended Serving of the Communion of the Church
Information about an addition to the Book of Order of a section providing for the extended serving of the church's communion to members isolated from congregational worship — confirmed by the 211th General Assembly (1999).

Occasional Paper #10 — Essential Tenets of Reformed Worship
Are there essential elements of worship in the Reformed tradition? If so, they are not likely to be found in abstract propositions, but they may be discerned through careful attention to the presence of God in the practice of worshiping communities.
