Unit 1: Preparing the Way

The goal of Unit 1 is to explore stories that tell us how people prepared for Jesus’ birth and ministry. John, Mary, Joseph and the shepherds — how did they get things ready for Jesus?

Session 1. John the Baptist Prepares the Way of the Lord
Mark 1:1–8

Main Idea:John the Baptist fulfills prophecy (see Fall, Unit 3, Session 12) and prepares the way for Jesus.

Something to Remember: Mark 1:7–8
He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of his sandals. I have baptized you with water; but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

Session 2. Who Is the One Who Is Coming?
Luke 1:26–38

Main Idea: Mary’s child will be the “Son of the Most High.”

Something to Remember: Luke 1:31–32
And now, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Most High, and the Lord God will give to him the throne of his ancestor David.

Session 3: Jesus Is Born!
Luke 2:1–7

Main Idea: Jesus is born in humble surroundings to parents who are ready for his arrival.

Something to Remember: Luke 2:7
And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in bands of cloth, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Session 4. Earth and Heaven Rejoice
Luke 2:8–20

Main Idea: Shepherds are visited by angels who proclaim Jesus’ birth. The shepherds go to see Jesus for themselves and they praise God for all they have heard and seen.

Something to Remember: Luke 2:16–18
So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph and the child lying in the manger. When they saw this, they made known what had been told them about this child; and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them.

Unit 2: Jesus’ Preparation

Jesus’ early life leads to the fulfillment of his ministry. The goal of Unit 2 is to explore this time of preparation. Who are some of the people Jesus meets along the way and how do they help him get ready?

Session 5. Anna and Simeon
Luke 2:25–40

Main Idea: Mary and Joseph take the infant Jesus to the temple in Jerusalem, as required by the Law of the Lord. There, they meet Anna and Simeon who foretell big things for this young child.

Something to Remember: Belonging to God: A First Catechism
Q. 24. Was Jesus just another human being?
A.
No. Although he was truly human, he was also God with us. As someone who was truly human, he could share all our sorrows. Yet because he was truly God, he could save us from all our sins.
Luke 2:34–35
Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, “This child is destined for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.”

Session 6. Magi
Matthew 2:1–12

Main Idea: Wise men from another country journey to see the child born king of the Jews. They treat Jesus as a king by bringing precious gifts and by paying him homage.

Something to Remember: Matthew 2:1–2
In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.”

Session 7. Jesus at Twelve Years Old
Luke 2:41–52

Main Idea: The only story we have about Jesus’ childhood tells us of a confident young man who prepared for his ministry with diligent study.

Something to Remember: Luke 2:49
He said to them, “Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father’s house?”

Session 8. Baptism of Jesus
Mark 1:9–11

Main Idea: Jesus is baptized by John and is called the Son of God.

Something to Remember: Belonging to God: A First Catechism
Q. 22. Who was sent to be the Messiah?
A.
God sent Jesus to be the Messiah. Messiah means “anointed one.” The New Testament word for Messiah is Christ. Jesus is called the Christ, because God anointed him to be the Savior who would rescue us from sin and death.
Mark 1:11
And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

Session 9. The Temptation of Jesus
Mark 1:12–13

Main Idea: Jesus is tested in the wilderness; his preparation is complete. [Harpers Bible Commentary, p. 986]

Something to Remember: Mark 1:12–13
And the Spirit immediately drove him out into the wilderness. He was in the wilderness forty days, tempted by Satan; and he was with the wild beasts; and the angels waited on him.

Unit 3: Preparing Others for Ministry

Jesus speaks with power and authority. His message shakes people up. The sessions of Unit 3 show examples of how Jesus prepares others to hear the final message of the cross and resurrection and to answer with confidence (as Peter does in session 13) the question, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Messiah of God.”

Session 10. Reading Isaiah in the Synagogue
Luke 4:14–30

Main Idea: Jesus preaches in his home church and prepares the people gathered there by telling them that his message is not only for them, but for non-believers as well. They are angry and react violently. Jesus continues on his way.

Something to Remember: Belonging to God: A First Catechism
Q. 25. What was Jesus like?
A.
When Jesus spoke, he spoke with God’s authority. When he acted, he acted with God’s power. The people were amazed. He was also gentle and loving. He cared for us in all our needs as a shepherd cares for the sheep.
Luke 4:29–30
They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.

Session 11. Fishing for People
Luke 5:1–11

Main Idea: Jesus calls disciples Simon Peter, James and John, and gives them a lesson that they understand. When they follow Jesus they will be gathering more people than they ever gathered fish, even on their best day.

Something to Remember: Belonging to God: A First Catechism
Q. 26. What did he do during his life on earth?
A.
He called disciples to follow him. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, blessed children, befriended outcasts, required people to repent, and forgave their sins. He taught people not to fear, but to trust always in God. He preached the good news of God’s love and gave everyone hope for new life.
Luke 5:10b
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.”

Session 12. Healing on the Sabbath
Luke 6:1–11

Main Idea: Jesus claims authority even over the Sabbath. The Pharisees are angry that Jesus works on the Sabbath even though what he does helps people.

Luke 6:5
Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”

Session 13. Peter’s Profession
Luke 9:18–20

Main Idea: Other people may debate the identity of Jesus, but Peter is sure. Jesus is “the Messiah of God.”

Luke 9:20
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Messiah of God.”
