Unit 3: Preparing Others for Ministry
Jesus speaks with power and authority. His message shakes people up. The sessions of Unit 3 show examples of how Jesus prepares others to hear the final message of the cross and resurrection and to answer with confidence (as Peter does in session 13) the question, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Messiah of God.”
Session 10. Reading Isaiah in the Synagogue
Luke 4:14–30
Main Idea: Jesus preaches in his home church and prepares the people gathered there by telling them that his message is not only for them, but for non-believers as well. They are angry and react violently. Jesus continues on his way.

Q. 25. What was Jesus like?
A. When Jesus spoke, he spoke with God’s authority. When he acted, he acted with God’s power. The people were amazed. He was also gentle and loving. He cared for us in all our needs as a shepherd cares for the sheep.
Luke 4:29–30
They got up, drove him out of the town, and led him to the brow of the hill on which their town was built, so that they might hurl him off the cliff. But he passed through the midst of them and went on his way.
Session 11. Fishing for People
Luke 5:1–11
Main Idea: Jesus calls disciples Simon Peter, James and John, and gives them a lesson that they understand. When they follow Jesus they will be gathering more people than they ever gathered fish, even on their best day.

Q. 26. What did he do during his life on earth?
A. He called disciples to follow him. He fed the hungry, healed the sick, blessed children, befriended outcasts, required people to repent, and forgave their sins. He taught people not to fear, but to trust always in God. He preached the good news of God’s love and gave everyone hope for new life.
Luke 5:10b
Then Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people.”
Session 12. Healing on the Sabbath
Luke 6:1–11
Main Idea: Jesus claims authority even over the Sabbath. The Pharisees are angry that Jesus works on the Sabbath even though what he does helps people.

Luke 6:5
Then he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the sabbath.”
Session 13. Peter’s Profession
Luke 9:18–20
Main Idea: Other people may debate the identity of Jesus, but Peter is sure. Jesus is “the Messiah of God.”
Something to Remember: Belonging to God: A First Catechism
Q. 22. Who was sent to be the Messiah?
A. God sent Jesus to be the Messiah. Messiah means “anointed one.” The New Testament word for Messiah is Christ. Jesus is called the Christ, because God anointed him to be the Savior who would rescue us from sin and death.
Luke 9:20
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Peter answered, “The Messiah of God.”
